Hemingway Day

　　The 50th anniversary of the publication of The Old Man and the Sea was celebrated at Key West, Florida during the Hemingway Day festival, which began Wednesday and ran through Sunday, the 103rd anniversary of the author’s birth.The celebration of Hemingway’s life and work included a Look-A-Like contest expected to attract more than 100 stocky, white-bearded contenders; a party on the grounds of the author’s Key West home; the unveiling of Hemingway memorabilia display; a marlin tournament and a short story competition.The Look-A-Like contest was the highlight of the festival.Hundreds of paunchy, white-haired, bearded men descended upon Key West for the contest to try and embody the great man known for his bravery in the Spanish Civil War and World War I and his love of bull fighting, sport fishing and hunting.Some contenders came in Bermuda shorts; some wore a tilted cap. Many were addressed in the sweater Hemingway wore in his 1957 portrait.The contest was held at Sloppy Joe’s bar, one of Hemingway’s favorite watering holes.The money raised from entry fees for the Look-A-Like contest will go to three scholarships to Key West Community College and one scholarship for a graduating senior at Key West High School.
