The big picture
(放大镜下的神奇世界)
What you’ll need<25D8> A magnifying glass
<25D8> Your science journal*
What to do1. Use your magnifying glass to see:
<25D8> What’s hidden in soil or under leaves;
<25D8> What’s on both sides of leaves; <25D8> How
mosquitos* bite; <25D8> Different patterns of
snowflakes*; <25D8> Butterfly wings; <25D8> How
many different objects can you find in the soil.
2. Draw pictures, or describe what you see, in your
notebook.
3. If you were able to examine a mosquito, you probably
saw how it bites something — with its proboscis*, a long
hollow tube that sticks* out of its head. Snowflakes are
fascinating* because no two are alike. Powdery* scales* give
butterfly wings their color. What a wonderful world.

Looking at objects closely is an important part of
science, and a magnifying glass* lets us see things we don’t
even know are there. It also helps us see how objects are
similar to or different from each other.
