TWO shop owners reported two foreigners stole more than
5,000 yuan (US$605) from them while changing money.A Mr. Dong,
who runs a shop in Bao’an District, told the Shenzhen Economic
Daily that two white men, one of about 1.9 meters high and
another around 1.6 meters, bought a pair of gloves for two
yuan at Dong’s shop at around 6 p.m. Saturday. Speaking
awkward Chinese, the short man then asked Dong to give them
100 yuan for small change.Dong gave the men a note from a
bundle of cash worth about 5,000 yuan. The short man said he
suspected the note was a fake and the bundle could contain
more fake money.Totally unguarded, Dong gave him the whole
bundle. After a one-minute check, the foreigners gave back the
notes saying they were genuine. After they left, Dong counted
the bundle and found 2,400 yuan was gone. A Mr. Lai, who owns
a computer store in Huaqiang Road North, also told the Daily
that a tall and a short white man stole 2,700 yuan Sunday
using similar tactics. Lai described the tall man as about
1.85 meters tall and around 50 years old, and the short man,
in his 20s, about 1.6 meters high. The pair also bought a small
article first and then asked Lai to give them a 100-yuan note
for small change. The two men possibly used magic tricks to
slip 27 100-yuan notes into their pockets while examining the
money, Lai said. The Daily did not say whether the two shop
owners had reported the thefts to police
