Yang YunfeiDAVID NESTOR has already planned a tour back
to China next summer, even before leaving Shenzhen for his
hometown in California, the United States.“I hope to return to
China next summer and teach as well. Hopefully, I will have
some time off to explore northern China, Beijing and
Shanghai,” he said.“I love the spicy food of Hunan and would
also like to visit Chairman Mao Zedong’s birthplace,” he
said.Nestor began his maiden tour of China four weeks ago when
he came to Shenzhen to teach English at an English training
summer camp. Nestor conceded that he had had no idea what
Shenzhen would be like before coming here.“I thought it was a
very small city with no tall buildings and didn’t realize it
had seven million people. But it turned out to be a very
modern city.”Back in his hometown in California, Nestor has
been involved in the English as a Second Language (ESL)
program, teaching immigrant children English.“You have to be
slow and patient when you teach children whose native language
is not English,” he said.He demonstrated this in the Shenzhen
summer camp. He showed great patience when children approached
him with various questions.Nestor said he was very pleased and
excited to be here as the majority of the students were “very
polite and respectful.”“If the students continue to progress
and practice speaking, reading and writing English, I honestly
feel that they will be fluent by the time they graduate from
high school,” he said.
