Han XiminECO-CITY is a concept of designing cities that
take less from the environment with less pollution. These
cities would be more sustainable by reducing energy
consumption and pollution.“As far as I can see, Shenzhen has
been good at urban planning and protecting the landscape,
while keeping its economic sustainability,” said Ian Douglas,
emeritus and research professor of the School of Geography of
the University of Manchester. He is in Shenzhen for the Fifth
International Eco-City Conference.“The relationship between
economy and ecology is just like soil and food. It is about
using money wisely. Fortune is created by using the
environment, while ecology is about using the environment
wisely because if we don’t, we won’t be able to support the
economy.” Shenzhen, which has a high reputation as an
international garden city with a good environmental record,
has an advantage in urban planning because it had only a
20-year history, he said.It has taken a good lesson from other
cities in the world where economies have been developed at the
cost of polluting the environment. “If we use all the oil, we
can’t drive a car,” said Douglas, hoping Shenzhen can maintain
its green areas.
