Why do onions make you cry?

It’s chemistry — that’s why. When the chemical in onions hits the water in your eye, the brominated* molecule* mixes with the water to form HBr. HBr is an acid*. This means it irritates* the eye. The tears are trying to wash away this irritation. And that’s why you cry when you cut onions. (SD-Agencies)(Difficulty: junior)
