PREMIER Zhu Rongji expressed support for a proposal to
grant residents of Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen permits
allowing them one-day visa-free entry to Hong Kong. But he has
not received any formal government document on the proposal
yet. He would give the final go-ahead if he receives a formal
plan, he was quoted as saying by Hong Kong’s Phoenix TV
yesterday.Zhu was asked by Hong Kong reporters whether he
supported the policy during the Earth Summit in South
Africa. But some Hong Kong experts predict that the visa-free
policy could not be implemented within a short period of time
due to technical problems.Chief Secretary of the HKSAR
Government Donald Tsang said in Hong Kong that the Hong Kong
side is negotiating with mainland authorities to seek ways to
quicken border crossings.Another high-ranking official said
any suggestions benefiting Hong Kong’s tourism and economic
development were welcome. <2001>(Li Jing)
