YULIE and Tonia are students at the National University
of Culture and Arts in Krasnodar in Russia. They are now in
Shenzhen performing as dancers at the Window of the World, a
well-known theme park in Overseas Chinese Town. They spoke
about their hometown, a city near the Black Sea. Tonia pointed
it out on a map she found in an old Chinese newspaper. She
said Shenzhen was very different, hot and wet. They work very
hard here, with rehearsals in the morning and performances in
the afternoon and at night.“We are young and like our work. We
want the visitors like our dancing,” they said. Both studied
folk dancing in Russia and are quite interested in Chinese
folk dances. They have learned some dances from their Chinese
peers at the Window of the World. The experience in Shenzhen
is greatly treasured by both of them. “When we dance in other
cities in Russia or any other country in future, we’ll
probably recall our dancing in Shenzhen and the friends we met
here.”Due to their tight work schedule, they don’t have much
time to see the city. But they have been shopping in Dongmen,
one of the busiest shopping centers in downtown Shenzhen. They
were impressed by the hospitality of some peddlers, who said
hello to them and asked them how to say it in Russian. If
possible, they would like to go to Happy Valley, a theme park
just opposite the Window of the World. Chinese friends told
them they can have a lot of fun there and they want to
try.Minsk World, a renovated aircraft carrier in the east
harbor of Shenzhen, is another tourist spot they want to visit
to meet some Russian actresses working there.Sometimes they
phone their parents when they miss home. Like all parents,
theirs will ask about everything from the food they eat to the
friends they have made. |
