IF you drive along the east coast of Shenzhen, pass the
two crowded Meisha beaches and the border checkpoint, you will
find a cluster of beautiful villas on a wooded hill facing the
sea.
This is Golden Beach Villas, a place unknown to many
Shenzheners. Nonetheless, it is a place worth visiting. If you
drive up along the slope leading to the entrance, stop in
front of the Golden Beach Club, you'll have a lovely view of
the ocean. The sea wind blowing on your face, sometimes strong
and sometimes mild, is just like a symphony telling you the
story of the sea.
The cluster of Sino-Euro-style villas, whose Chinese name
is literally "Golden Beach Club for Tourism & Holiday"
(金海滩旅游度假俱乐部), offers multiple rental choices. I like the
800-square-foot, two-bedroom apartments which offer a
panoramic view of the bay. It is great to enjoy fruit salad
with your family in the spacious living room, or just sit on
the sofa and enjoy the fabulous view of the sea. These
apartments even offer a small cooking area complete with a
microwave oven and a refrigerator.
In the morning before the sunshine burns, climbing the
hill is good exercise. The fresh air, the sunshine, the
singing birds, the noisy cicadas and beautiful butterflies
bring you into a virtual Shangri-La. And it's only a 30 minute
drive from the city!
There are plenty of activities offered in the club --
fishing, movies, saunas, bar, ping-pong, and a bodybuilding
gym among them -- but I prefer to relax with my family,
refreshing myself with the starlit sky and soothing breeze off
the sea. Golden Beach Villas is the perfect place to practice
the art of doing nothing.
The villa is just a 10-minute walk from the beach, and a
10-minute drive will bring you to Yantian Seafood Street,
where you can choose from scores of restaurants along the
seaside. Seafood there is fresh and cheap, and the quality and
taste of the dishes is as good as what you'd expect from an
expensive restaurant in town.
