LIAO MINGYU, an 11-year-old Shenzhen girl, voiced her
concerns over the deteriorating global environment and urged
governments to do more at the World Summit on Sustainable
Development in Johannesburg early yesterday.
On behalf of the World Children’s Association and together
with Justin Friesen of Canada and Analiz Vergara of Ecuador,
Liao presented a list of challenges to the world’s leaders,
asking for more concrete efforts to improve the environment.
The lists were written and voted on by some 400 children
from 80 countries.Liao is an elementary student with Shenzhen
Experimental School, a State-level green school in China.
She was invited to the global summit by the United Nations
in July for her outstanding English skills, enthusiasm and
knowledge of the environment.
“We can walk, take a bicycle and share a car to reduce air
pollution, and we can use more recycling products to reduce
pollution in the environment,” said Liao, expressing her ideas
on environmental protection in an interview with Xinhua News
Agency.
“We must protect the environment while pursuing economic
growth and punish those who destroy the environment.”Liao was
born into a family in which her creativity and personality
were encouraged and developed.“In the family and neighborhood,
the little girl has a strong awareness of saving electricity,
water and rubbish classification,” said Liao Yuanfei, the
girl’s father.
“We highly value her education in the environment through
daily activities,” her father said. The girl attended a summer
camp organized by Shenzhen Daily and Edgewood Training
Institute this summer.
In addition to learning English and making friends, she
was given a special task by her father to interview children
and teachers from local and American schools about
environmental issues.Liao went to study in the U.S. with her
father last year.
She made a lot of friends and her English greatly
improved. She often discusses her ideas on environmental
issues with foreign friends through e-mail. She likes going to
botanic gardens and safari parks, which are close to nature.
She often takes a video camera, a notebook and a pen with her
to take notes. |
