 World Summit

 JOHANNESBURG: With world leaders taking the stage and demanding action, negotiators at the World Summit put the finishing touches on a global plan to improve the lives of the poor while preserving the environment.

 Late Monday, negotiators resolved the last main sticking points in a 70-odd page action plan covering a slew of environmental and development woes, including energy, clean water, health and sanitation.Russia said it would ratify the Kyoto Protocol change soon but did not commit to a specific time.

 Typhoon toll

 GANGNEUNG, South Korea: The death toll from South Korea’s worst typhoon in 40 years rose to 113 yesterday as soldiers led a desperate search for 71 people still missing after the weekend devastation. North Korea also reported scores of deaths.

 A South Korean cruise tour of North Korea’s Diamond Mountain was temporarily suspended. There is also a two-day postponement of Red Cross talks with South Korea scheduled to open at the mountain resort today.

 Volleyball

 LEIPZIG, Germany: With a 3-0 victory over Poland, China consolidated their leading position in Group D to further increase their chance to qualify for the second round at the 2002 women’s volleyball World Championships.Premier LeagueLIVERPOOL: Alan Shearer capped a late Newcastle fightback against Liverpool in the Premier League Monday, adding the equalizer with two minutes remaining to draw 2-2.

 Keane to be sidelined

 MANCHESTER: Manchester United captain Roy Keane will have hip surgery and be sidelined for up to three months.TennisNEW YORK: Pete Sampras powered into the fourth round of the U.S. Open by overcoming Greg Rusedski. Sampras next plays Tommy Haas for a quarterfinal berth. Andre Agassi and Lleyton Hewitt already are in the final eight, beating Jan-Michael Gambill and Jiri Novak. Jennifer Capriati and Lindsay Davenport won in straight sets to move into the quarterfinals, where Capriati will meet Amelie Mauresmo, who knocked off Kim Clijsters.
