HIV virus has been found in the tears of some AIDS
patients although in very low quantities.
Doctors it is possible for HIV to be transmitted by an
ophthalmologist, who regularly come in contact with tears.
Chen Zhizhao voiced the warning at a seminar at
Guangzhou's Zhongshan University yesterday.
A member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, an
organization of ophthalmologists dedicated to preserving eye
health and sight, Chen said eye doctors should be cautious in
treating HIV virus carriers.
Chen took part in a research project of American Academy
of Ophthalmology in 1986 and was the first to discover HIV
virus in tears.
The seminar was told the university was planning to
introduce a quick HIV testing kit, which had been approved by
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The user can access a blood sample from a finger prick
and send it to a certified laboratory for testing.
Enclosed in the test kit is an identifying number. To
obtain results, the user can give the operator the ID number.
The accuracy of the anonymous testing had been proved to be
better than 90 percent.
