SHUILI Village in Baiyun District of Guangzhou was hit by
a hailstorm Tuesday afternoon. Some people were slightly
injured and many vegetable and fruit trees were damaged.
A Mr. Chen from the village said the hail lasted 10
minutes and the hailstones were as big as thumbs.
A fruit peddler saw some 20 people hit by hailstones.
Many people rushed to find shelter and were afraid to venture
out long after the hail had stopped.
Riding a motorcycle from Huadu to Shuili, Mr Deng ran
into the hailstorm. He said his arms were hurt and his wrists
red after being hit by hailstones. He said he felt dizzy with
the sound of hailstones hitting his helmet.
Vegetable growers were hit hard by the storm. A tearful
Mrs. Gong said that at least one third of her mustard leaves
were damaged with losses totaling four to five thousand yuan.
Experts said the hail in summer was normal. It is a
result of strong air currents and occurred sometimes in
Guangdong in spring and summer.
The hailstorm was confined to a relatively small area.
