Jason RohligON my first trip to Hong Kong and China back
in February last year I fell in love with the Chinese
mainland. After several months back in Canada — and some
serious thought — I decided to relocate to Shenzhen. My plan
was to spend time with my fiancée and learn about Chinese
history as well as experience some Chinese culture. I have
been in Shenzhen since June this year and never once regretted
my decision to come here. Shenzhen is a beautiful and modern
city with many amenities and activities to offer. The city is
rich with museums, art, music and, best of all, restaurants
offering some of the most delicious foods from every province
in china. What impressed me most about Shenzhen was the
beautiful and well-kept motorways and streets. These
greenscapes and gardens are like works of art. They make
commuting and traveling throughout the city a relaxing and
beautiful experience. Also, the people here in Shenzhen are
some of the nicest people I have ever met. They sometimes go
out of their way to help me find restaurants and, on most
occasions, even offer to assist with directions to find my way
home or to interesting local attractions unknown to many
foreigners. As an amateur photographer, there is what seems to
be an almost unlimited supply of beautiful architecture and
parks here in the city. I have made many wonderful and truly
great friends here. Communication is sometimes difficult but,
with the help of pictures and creative hand gestures,
communicating is always fun and interesting. In the future I
hope to travel to see some of China’s many beautiful and
historic cities such as Xi’an and Beijing.I am learning to
speak mandarin and trying to learn as much about Chinese
history and culture as possible. I look forward to spending
some time here in Shenzhen and I feel very fortunate to be in
a position that can let me experience one of the most
wonderful and amazing places in Asia.My advice to expatriates
and foreign visitors is to keep an open mind when talking to
people or trying to communicate.Remember a friendly approach
almost always elicits a friendly response.
