health alertONLY one in 10 university teachers in Guangdong is
completely fit, a recent survey by the provincial education
workers’ union shows. Of 8,417 teachers polled, nearly 70 per
cent were in sub-standard health while over 20 per cent had
succumbed to certain diseases. Cardiovascular diseases were
the most common while teachers with higher degrees tended to
be healthier, the survey found. Price on the riseTHE consumer
price index rose slightly by 1.1 per cent last month over the
previous month in Guangzhou, a survey by the city’s polling

result of the fall in supply caused by the hot weather and
tropical storms. The school summer vacation also pushed up
