CHINA Telecom, the country’s biggest fixed-line phone
firm, got the nod from U.S. regulators to provide voice, data
and other services between the two countries. The move marks a
shift from China Telecom’s strategy of only providing
Internet-related services in the United States, an
unidentified company official was quoted as saying in Beijing
recently. The former State telephone monopoly had turned its
U.S. office into China Telecom (U.S.) Co., and applied to the
Federal Communications Commission in August for permission to
provide international services. The U.S. branch aimed to tap
Chinese and U.S. multinational firms and would develop
products and services for the U.S. market. (SD-Agencies)
