SPECIAL counters for foreigners have been set up at the
Luohu Checkpoint, slashing foreign travelers’ waiting time to
less than three minutes. The measure, introduced Thursday, has
put an end to foreign passport holders sharing a lane with
Chinese mainland and Taiwanese residents. As many as 15,000
foreigners passed through the four special lanes (two for Hong
Kong-bound foreigners and two for mainland-bound foreigners)
in the first two days since the lanes were in place, the China
News Service reported yesterday. Foreign travelers welcomed
the new arrangements, saying the waiting time had been cut by
15 to 30 minutes. The move came after Guangdong Governor Lu
Ruihua’s apology last week to a group of foreign businessmen
for the delays at the Luohu Checkpoint, the world’s busiest
border crossing.Responding to a complaint from a Korean
businessman, Lu said at a luncheon hosted by the American
Chamber of Commerce: “Sorry, sorry, we will take measures to
improve the situation.”
