AFGHAN authorities held a security chief and 17 others for
questioning Saturday after a failed assassination attempt on
President Hamid Karzai who travelled to the Panjsher Valley
amid tight security to visit the shrine of a slain commander.
Karzai flew to the grave of Ahmad Shah Masood to mark the
first anniversary of the legendary commander’s murder at the
hands of suspected al Qaeda operatives. The attempt on the
president’s life in the southern city of Kandahar was blamed
on the same network. “We will continue to fulfil the
obligations and the desires of the man who lies here,” Karzai
told reporters near the green-domed shrine high on a hill set
among stunning mountain peaks. Thursday’s assassination bid on
Karzai came just hours after a huge car bomb ripped through a
crowded street in Kabul, killing up to 26 people and injuring
150. The two incidents raised fears of a further escalation in
violence in Afghanistan. (SD-Agencies)
