Habitat*: rainforest* in Monteverde, Costa Rica*.
Diet: Insects mainly.
Enemies: Humans and acid rain*.
Facts:
<25D8> The males are bright orange/golden in color.
The females don’t look anything like the males and have a
mottled* appearance.
<25D8> Unlike most toads, their skin is shiny and
brilliant*.
<25D8> These toads are only found on a hill in
Monteverde, Costa Rica. They are well on their way to
extinction* and none have been seen since 1989. For an animal
to be pronounced extinct, there must be no sightings in the
last 50 years.
<25D8> They have been studied in April when they
breed*. Hundreds of males and females used to gather to mate*
and this gave scientists a chance to study them. In the year
1989, when scientists went to study them, only a single toad
appeared. None have been sighted since.
