Senate OKs arming

WASHINGTON (Sept. 6—AP): The U.S. Senate (参议院) voted
overwhelmingly (以压倒多数) Thursday to allow commercial pilots
(商用飞机飞行员) to carry weapons in the cockpit (驾驶舱) after the Bush
administration dropped its opposition to the idea.

KABUL(Sept. 6—The New York Times): A uniformed gunman in
Kandahar (坎大哈) narrowly failed in an assassination (暗杀)
attempt on President Hamid Karzai hours after a car bomb in
Kabul killed at least 25 people.
Emergency landing
MANILA(Sept. 5—AP): An airplane with 47 people on board,
mostly South Korean tourists, made an emergency landing in
Manila, skidding (滑行) along the tarmac (跑道) after the landing
gear malfunctioned (失灵).
Top Mitsui officials
resign over slew of
scandals
TOKYO(Sept. 4—AP): The president of Mitsui and Co. said
that he and another senior company official will resign to
take responsibility (承担责任) for a bid-rigging (操纵投标) scandal
(丑闻). President Shinjiro Shimizu, 64, and Chairman Shigeji
Ueshima, 71, will jointly resign from their positions at
Japan’s second-biggest trading company on Sept. 30
S.Korea typhoon
leaves 113 dead,
71 missing
SEOUL(Sept. 3—Reuters): The death toll (死亡人数) from South
Korea’s worst typhoon (台风) in 40 years rose to 113 as soldiers
led a desperate (孤注一掷的) search for 71 people still missing
after the weekend devastation (毁坏).
