Villagers from San Salvador Atenco about 30 km East of Mexico City raise their machetes as they declare their village to be autonomous Tuesday.

　　Atenco was the scene of violent demonstrations earlier this year after the Mexican federal government announced plans to build the capital's new airport there. The government backed down and is now looking into building the airport on nearby federal lands, although the villagers have said they will fight that project too.
