CHINESE defender Li Weifeng made his English Premier
League debut with Everton, which was edged 1-0 by Southampton
Wednesday.
Li Weifeng from Shenzhen Ping An played a full game with
compatriot teammate Li Tie from Liaoning Bird.
Everton went close with a Thomas Gravesen shot two
minutes into the second period, and midfielder Li Tie, who
gave another tidy performance, was next to be frustrated when
his half-volley from 10 meters bounced wide.
Marian Pahars scored from the penalty spot 17 minutes
from the end after the Latvian striker had been brought down
by David Weir.
Li Weifeng got a yellow card in the injury time.
Meanwhile, Kevin Nolan scored with 14 minutes remaining,
giving Bolton a 1-0 upset win at Manchester United, its second
win in two years at Old Trafford.
On a night of surprising results, Tottenham Hotspur and
Liverpool both failed to hold two-goal leads and wasted a
chance to pass defending champion Arsenal and move into first
place.
Fulham beat visiting Spurs 3-2 at Loftus Road and
Liverpool was held to a 2-2 tie at Anfield by visiting
newcomer Birmingham.
Tottenham took a 2-0 lead as Dean Richards and Teddy
Sheringham scored, but Japanese star Junichi Inamoto started
the comeback against American goalkeeper Kasey Keller, Steed
Malbranque converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute and
Sylvain Legwinski scored in the fifth minute of second-half
injury time.
Liverpool built its lead on goals by Danny Murphy and
Steven Gerrard, but Clinton Morrison scored twice to tie it.
After its 2-1 victory over Manchester City Tuesday,
Arsenal (3-0-2) remains top, one point ahead of Tottenham
(3-1-1) and two ahead of Leeds (3-2), Liverpool (2-0-3) and
Chelsea (2-0-3). Middlesbrough (2-1-2) and Manchester United
(2-1-2) are three points back.
England captain Beckham, who lost possession of the ball
inside his own area to set up Kevin Nolan’s winner, apologized
to the United followers.
Leeds United won 2-0 at Newcastle with strikes by Mark
Viduka and England striker Alan Smith while Chelsea twice came
from behind to win 3-2 at Blackburn.
Promoted West Bromwich Albion, strong favorite to go back
down, made it two shutout victories in a row by winning 1-0 at
West Ham and leaving the Hammers in last place. Southampton,
another struggler, edged Everton 1-0 thanks to penalty by
Latvian Pahars penalty.
At Villa Park, Aston Villa scored a 2-0 victory over
Charlton with strikes by Ecuador star Ulysses De La Cruz and
Stefan Moore.
There was a minute’s silence before each game as a mark
of respect to the casualties of the September 11 terrorist
attacks on New York and Washington.
