TWO brothers surnamed Deng were arrested Friday for
allegedly evading a court compensation verdict brought down
more than four years ago.
According to Yang Xiancai, the enforcement chief of the
Higher People’s Court of Guangdong Province, this was the
first case of its kind in the province since the promulgation
of a judicial explanation from the national people’s congress
concerning deliberate evasion of a court verdict.
In August 1997, a man surnamed Chen gave a paid motorbike
ride to a woman surnamed Li. An accident occurred with Chen
violating traffic regulations, leaving Li dead.
The court held Chen completely liable for Li’s death with
the two Dengs found to have joint liabilities. One Deng had
sold the motorbike to his brother without completing legal
procedures. While the first Deng remained the legal owner of
the motorbike, the second Deng loaned it to Chen, who caused
the accident and Li’s death. Chen escaped immediately after
the accident. The two Dengs ignored the verdict until they
were taken into custody.
Li’s parents were paid the court-awarded compensation of
nearly 120,000 yuan (US$14,4400) shortly after the Dengs were
detained.(Flame Wu)
