Question corner

This issue: The Mid-Autumn Festival is coming. Do you think it is still an important festival in China? How would you like to spend the day?

  1. Coldog, 15, Class 3, Senior 1, Shenzhen Middle School

Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday. And it has special meaning for most Chinese since it brings us a lot of troubles.

Moon cakes are one of the problems. Some moon cakes are made using old rather than fresh filling. Of course, it is very unhealthy. When the public learned about this it made some people afraid of eating moon cakes.

Despite this, I think Mid-Autumn Festival is still a time in China, and I love the festival very much. Although I am a student and have to study a lot, I usually spend an hour playing with my good friends. Sometimes we use some stones and bricks to make a kiln and barbecue food. It is wonderful! I think I will enjoy that night.

  2. Iris (张静), 15, Hongling Middle School

I think it is one of the most important festivals in China. Most Chinese people will miss their faraway relatives. And they will not only send their best wishes by the phone or computer, but also send moon cakes by the post.

That night, I will phone my grandparents to send them my best regards, because they are very kind to me. Then I will share moon cakes with my parents and enjoy the moon.

  3. Sylvia (江达睿), 17, Yucai Middle School

It has always been an important part of our lives. I think it is just a little less important than Spring Festival.

Although our lives have changed a lot and many foreign festivals have appeared, Chinese traditions still remain in these modern times. So does the Mid-Autumn Festival. It advances with the time. The moon cakes and the reunion dinner do not play the most important parts of this day any more. It’s communication between people that matters.

Today people are busier and busier, so the Mid-Autumn Festival works as a bridge connecting one’s heart with another’s. The relationship between you and your relatives or friends can be improved by enjoying full moon and sharing the nice night which is filled with bright moonlight.

Su Shi, the famous Song Dynasty poet, said, “I wish that people could be eternal, and share the full moon wherever they are.” That is my wish too.

4 . Coco (李婕莹), 17, Futian Middle School

This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival is special. It is, as usual, a time of reunion. It is also my father’s birthday!

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve heard a story about the goddess of the moon. It is said that she and her husband lived a very happy life together, and were very much in love.

Her husband, Houyi had a magical medicine which could make people immortal. But one of his disciples wanted to get it. When Houyi went out one day, the disciple threatened to kill HouYi’s wife in order to get the medicine.

She ate it herself at once and then she fluttered higher and higher. At last, she reached the moon and learned of Wugang and Yutu. But she still missed Houyi and Houyi missed her as well. So today, we have the festival to commemorate the story.

  5. Lu Yao (卢遥), 15, Class 12, Junior 3, Yucai Middle School

In my opinion, celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival is an important way to uphold the traditions of our Chinese culture. Yesterday I had some moon cakes with a foreign friend. We both enjoyed ourselves, even though the cakes weren’t as delicious as they could have been. He showed a great interest in Chinese culture. I guess that he could understand the homesickness which people always have when the festival comes, even if I could not express this kind of feeling very well.

  6. Sweetie Candy (肖亦书), 14, Class 5, Junior 2, Shenzhen Middle School

I like the festival very much, because on that day I can eat moon cakes. I can see the moon very round in the sky, and I like the fairy tale of the Mid-Autumn Festival. At the time, I’ll pray that my family and my friends will be happy and healthy forever.

  7. Chen Lihai (陈利海), 16, Class 1, Senior 1, Pinggang Middle School

It’s still an important festival. On that night, everything seems quiet in the gentle moonlight. What a beautiful scene it is! People will go back home wherever they are so as to enjoy moon cakes with their family. Not only do the moon cakes taste good, but they also symbolize reunion.

For me, what a pity that right now I live at school and there isn’t enough time for me to go back home. But thinking that I can spend the day with my classmates, I feel much better. I’m going to invite some friends of mine to have a seat in the moonlight, eating moon cakes and chatting about the family, the school life and the future. Although I can’t enjoy the beautiful night with my family, with the companion of my classmates, I’m sure all my troubles will disappear and a bright tomorrow will be on its way in the gentle moonlight.
