In Mexico*, there’s a new kind of money. It’s shiny,
bright blue, and made of plastic*. No, it’s not play money, or
even some sort of credit card*. The plastic money works just
like regular paper money. Starting September 30, the plastic
money will begin to replace* Mexico’s paper money.
The first plastic bill is the 20 peso*, which is equal to
about US$2. The 20-peso note is Mexico’s most used bill. If
the plastic 20 peso is successful, then the 50, 100, 200, and
500 peso bills may also be turned to plastic. In a few years,
all of Mexico’s money might be made out of plastic.
Officials like the new plastic bills because they last up
to four times longer than paper bills. Also, the plastic money
has a special clear window that makes it difficult to
counterfeit*.
The plastic money is as thin as paper and the same size
as Mexico’s paper money. The plastic money will even work in
ATM machines* and vending machines*.
