It’s hard to believe the three men are father and sons!
Adam is at least 60 years old. Fortunately, or rather
unfortunately, he and his two sons — Tom and Bill — live in
the same cell.
Before they were sent to prison, the judge said with a
kind smile: “Everyone of you can take one thing with you so
that you won’t become bored.”
“You mean one thing. Is it anything in the world?” Adam
asked at once.
“Yes. Anything you like.”
“Oh, I want to take my wife Mary with me!” Adam
said happily and excitedly.
“No.” The judge hit at the desk with his gavel. “A wife
is a person, not a thing!”
“But I can’t live without her and she can’t live without
me!” Adam was in tears. It made the judge sad. There was a
puzzled expression on his face. He really didn’t know what to
do with the request. Everyone knew he was a warm-hearted man.
After a while, the judge nodded his head. “All right. You
are allowed to do so.”
“What about you, young men?” The judge turned to the
sons.
“We are grateful for the mercy you showed our father,”
they said feelingly. “We will take nothing but our love for
our parents.” Their words moved many people in the court to
tears.
At last, the judge turned to Mary: “Do you agree to do
so? Twenty years in prison. That is a hard life. Think
carefully.”
“I’d love to. I can spend my remaining years with my
husband and my dear sons. I am pleased enough,” Mary said
firmly.
The story is over. Family love endures. Do you agree with
me?
