Pink Floyd created the music style — concept album*.
Their effort The Wall was released in 1979.
Is There Anybody Out There? is a live* version* of The
Wall which has been skillfully edited together from shows Pink
Floyd performed in 1980 and 1981. So technically it’s the same
album jazzed* up with visuals.
Since the show was so rigidly* structured, there was
little opportunity for the band to stretch out*. What all of
this means is that Is There Anybody Out There? is The Wall by
any other name, and it isn’t for anybody but Floyd fanatics*.
Will this disappoint the less-dedicated listeners? Not
necessarily, since anybody familiar with The Wall will likely
enjoy the new album.
There are two new songs, What Shall We Do Now and The
Last Few Bricks, which were not included in the original
studio album. However, Another Brick in the Wall remains the
best song on the album.
So while I’m reviewing Is There Anybody Out There?, it’s
The Wall that deserves five stars. In any case, Pink Floyd
puts on a good show. If you’re interested in the live version
I suggest picking up the DVD.
