As she floated* in space, nearly 240 miles above the
earth, astronaut Peggy Whitson was named the first science
officer of the International Space Station*.
Dr. Whitson currently* lives on the orbiting* station
with two Russian scientists. She is scheduled* to return to
the earth in November.
Her duties as science officer will include overseeing all
of the U.S. experiments being conducted on the station during
her stay. Many of these experiments explore the effects of
space on the human body.
“The science that we’re doing here is great,” says
Whitson. “I think we should try to do more. I think we are
