ONE of the most surprising things Canadian couple Patrick
and Jenny Bell have seen in China was a picture of a steer
wrestling match at the Cochrane Lions Rodeo back in their home
province of Alberta in the Sept. 9 issue of Shenzhen Daily.
“It was really unexpected for us to see our friend in the
picture. It is really a small world,” Patrick, 32, said.
Patrick and Jenny, 23, love steer wrestling. Patrick was
a professional steer wrestler before they came to Shiyan
Public School last August.
But they now love teaching English more than anything
else. They believe it is a fulfilling job.
They spend their spare time riding bicycles around the
township of Shiyan sightseeing and meeting people.
One of Patrick’s favorite activities is shopping with his
wife and bargaining with shop keepers.
“I have so much fun. Sometimes it becomes a sport for
me,” Patrick said.
“I’m not so good at bargaining as Pat, but it is fun for
me to watch him,” Jenny.
“My advice to foreigners living in China is, first of
all, to learn how to count in Chinese,” Patrick said.
The past year’s experience here has totally changed their
preconceptions about China.
“Most Westerners still don’t know what’s really going on
in China now,” Jenny said sadly.
“We really love Chinese people, food and culture and we
really enjoy so much freedom here,” Patrick said.
