NANHUA Primary School in Futian District was recently
recognized as the only health promotion school in Shenzhen.
The recognition came after the school introduced a
get-fit program last year that requires students to exercise
for at least one hour each day.
Of the school’s total student population, about 11
percent, or 78, were obese students, who have found themselves
as nimble as squirrels after continuing the exercises for over
six months, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported recently.
According to Chen Shunhua, the school’s headmaster, it
decided last year to take measures to improve health of
students as more and more were becoming obese under study
pressures and unhealthy habits.
They designed a contract form between parents and the
school, dealing with the children’s diet, sports and sleeping
and then exchanged ideas to improve improper habits.
Some students were unable to finish the one-hour
exercises because of a lack of fitness when it was introduced
last year, the report said. But now, almost every student
loves it and says their lives will benefit greatly from the
exercises.
A recent survey found that the number of obese children
in China has increased 10 percent each year since the
1980s.(Xiao Shao)
