ARSENAL won its first Champions League victory on the
road in nine games in 19 months by outclassing Netherlands’
PSV Eindhoven 4-0 Wednesday.
Meanwhile, defending champion Real Madrid destroyed
Belgium’s Racing Genk 6-0, and Spanish champion Valencia also
won its second straight game, 3-0 over Moscow Spartak, with
goals from Miguel Angulo, Miguel Mista and Juan Sanchez.
Ronaldo was to debut for Real, but was held out with a
minor injury.
Real continued to show why it’s the favorite as Michel
Salgado scored in first-half injury time with Genk’s Zokora
also adding an own-goal in injury time. Luis Figo made it 3-0
on a penalty in the 55th. And the goals kept coming with Guti,
Albert Celades and Raul finishing off the scoring.
Arsenal’s Brazilian Gilberto Silva took just 21 seconds
to bury the second fastest goal ever in Champions League.
Fredrik Ljungberg started the move by dispossessing Andre
Ooijer in midfield and Thierry Henry seized on a mistake by
PSV midfielder Johann Vogel to tear down the left and whip in
a pinpoint cross.
Only Alessandro Del Piero’s effort for Juventus against
Manchester United in October 1997 (20.12 seconds) has been
scored quicker.
Ljungberg chased a Gilberto through ball to finish
consummately with the outside of his left foot and make it 2-0
in the 66th.
Arsenal took total command and Henry made generous amends
by sliding the third under PSV keeper Ronald Waterreus nine
minutes from time and making it 4-0 two minutes into injury
time on a similar move.
PSV made the better chances in the first half. Arnold
Bruggink had a goal disallowed in the third minute for
handball and his striking partner Mateja Kezman came close
three times.
In other games, Borussia Dortmund beat Auxerre 2-1. Jan
Koeller scored in the 6th minute and teammate Marcio Amoroso
added a goal in the 78th.
Liverpool and FC Basel tied at 1. Liverpool dominated the
first half, but Basel tied the score in the 43rd minute off
Julio Hernan Rossi’s goal.
AEK Athens also tied AS Roma 0-0. The draw gave AEK two
points in the group with Roma getting its first point after
two matches.
French champion Lyon defeated Rosenborg 5-0 after taking
a 4-0 halftime lead with goals from Tony Vairelles (two), Eric
Carriere and Sonny Anderson. Congolese-born forward Peguy
Luyindula headed in Lyon’s fifth goal.
Striker Hernan Crespo scored his third goal in two
Champions League matches this season to give Inter Milan a 1-0
victory over Ajax. (SD-Agencies)
