JUST 35 years after he was awarded a fellowship of the
Institute of Actuaries in Britain Sept. 25, 1968, Stephen T.
Meldrum celebrated the anniversary in Shenzhen with his
colleagues in Ping An Insurance Company.
Meldrum arrived in Shenzhen in 1999 as chief actuary of
Ping An after three decades with Lincoln National Life
Insurance.
He was conferred a 2001 friendship award, a national
award to expatriates for their outstanding contribution to
China’s economic and social development bestowed by the
Chinese Government.
Now living in the Silver Lake area, he is quite content
with life in Shenzhen. Sometimes he goes to Hong Kong for
cultural events and entertainment.
He has found himself something of a popular personality
in China. Once he attended a seminar in Nankai University in
Tianjin. Among the guests were highly ranked people from the
international actuary industry such as the president of the
International Actuaries Association. When the guests finished
speeches and left, Meldrum found about a hundred people
waiting for him outside. They all wanted to take photographs
with him, ignoring the other VIPs.
When he went to the northern China coastal city of Dalian
for a meeting, he found hundreds of posters in the streets
with his picture and wording which read: Stephen T. Meldrum
has come to Dalian!
