Golf event tees off for peace

Newman Huo

THE United Nations Refugee Agency in Hong Kong and Sina.com staged a charity golf event, Drive for Peace, at Missions Hills in Guanlan Township Friday.

This is the first time business leaders from the Pearl River Delta area have rallied under a public-private partnership to donate money towards the humanitarian program of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Hong Kong.

So far, the event has raised about HK$1 million.

As one of the world’s principal humanitarian agencies, the UNHCR works in 120 countries and cares for 22 million people displaced by war and violence, the great majority of whom are women and children.

As China’s number one Internet portal, Sina.com offered online advertising space and service to match sponsorship value as a reward to donor companies.

Being the co-organizer of the event, Sina.com championed philanthropic donations from entrepreneurs.
