THE first lawsuit paid by the Guangdong Provincial
Consumers’ Rights Committee to protect a consumer was decided
by a court in Guangzhou recently.
According to the beneficiary, indentified as Mr. Wei, his
4-year-old son, Xiao Wei, was injured in June when he was
playing with a child’s bicycle.
His thumb became caught in the bike and was broken.
Wei sought compensation from the bicycle manufacturers
but they refused. Huang Zhiwei, a lawyer with the Guangdong
Provincial Consumers’ Rights Committee, took the matter to the
Fangcun District People’s Court in Guangzhou, seeking a total
of 124,125.6 yaun in compensation.
The committee will pay the cost of the lawsuit which is
about 3,993 yuan. The committee said the case was the first in
the sector and hoped to be able to help more disadvantaged
people.
