CHINA snatched five gold medals yesterday to continued
its lead at the Asian Games with seven golds.
Cyclist Li Meifang won China’s third gold in Busan, South
Korea, early yesterday, finishing more than a minute faster
than Japan’s Ayumu Otsuka in the women’s 24.2-kilometer time
trial.
Li Meifang clocked 34 minutes and 24.820 seconds, Ayumu
Otsuka was 35:31.310, while Lee Eun-joo of South Korea was
third with 35:38.650.
Later, Li Zhuo won gold in the women’s 48-kilogram
weightlifting division based on lighter body weight after she
and Myanmar’s Kay Thi Win tied world records for snatch and
total lift.
Both lifted a total of 200 kilograms — 90 in the snatch
and 110in the clean and jerk — but the heavier Kay Thi Win had
to settle for silver. Indonesia’s Raema Lisa Rumbe was won the
bronze with a total of 195.
Li couldn’t match her own world record of 115 in the
clean and jerk. China’s Wang Mingjuan, who is not competing in
Busan, set the records of 90 for the snatch and 200 in total
June 1.
1998 Olympic champion Sun Fuming of China beat South
Korean Choi Sook-ie to win the women’s over-78kg title at the
women’s judo competition.
The bronze medals went to Mongolia’s Erdene Ochir
Dolgormaa and Thailand’s Paradawade Pestonyee.
Yang Yu won the women’s 200m freestyle and set a new
record of the Asian Games.
The 17-year-old girl from East China’s Zhejiang Province
clocked one minute and 58.43 seconds. Her teammate Xu Yanwei
finished the second place in 1:59.42, also breaking the games
old mark of 1:59.77.
Zhang Lei won China’s third gold medal in fencing,
beating Lim Mi-kyung of South Korea 15-9 in the women’s foil
competition in the Asian Games.
On Sunday, China took the first gold medals of the 14th
Asian Games. Wang Haibin won the men’s foil final and Zhao
