INTERNAZIONALE of Milan took over first place in the
Italian Serie A by beating Chievo 2-1 Sunday night on
Christian Vieri’s two goals, including a late penalty shot.
The winning goal came with 12 minutes left. Viere was
fouled, then appeared to call off fellow striker Alvaro
Recoba, choosing to take the penalty himself.
Inter is 3-0. AC Milan, Juventus and Bologna are tied for
second place at 2-0-1.
Earlier Sunday, Francesco Totti scored three goals to
give AS Roma its first victory of the season, 3-2 over Roberto
Baggio’s Brescia. Roma, which won the 2000-01 Italian League
title and finished second last season, started off 0-2.
Totti made a penalty kick a half-hour in, made it 2-0 in
the 41st minute on a long shot into a high corner, and scored
from outside the area with nine minutes left.
Baggio scored on a penalty kick — his 182nd career goal —
just before halftime. Austrian midfielder Markus Schopp scored
the other goal for Brescia (1-2).
Roma entered the match desperate for a victory after
suffering surprising losses in its first two league matches to
Bologna and Modena, coupled with two disappointing results in
the Champions League.
Also Sunday, Bologna defeated Piacenza 1-0, Como tied
Reggina 1-1, Modena edged Torino 2-1, Empoli beat Perugia 3-1,
and Udinese topped Atalanta 1-0. On Saturday, Juventus tied
Parma 2-2, and Milan tied Lazio 1-1.(SD-Agencies)
