China beaten in table tennis, maintains lead

  

  CHINA got nine golds and lifted its lead at the Asian Games to 106 yesterday without much help from its stars in table tennis, a sport it used to dominate.

  World Keirin champion Li Na beat Tachikawa Maya of Japan 2-0 in the best-of-three women’s cycling sprint final for China’s 100th gold medal.

  South Koreans beat Chinese for the women’s doubles gold, and eliminated them in the semifinals en route to the men’s doubles title.

  Chinese divers had no such troubles in Busan, South Korea. World champions Guo Jingjingand Wu Minxia performed more difficult dives and gained higher marks than their rivals as they easily won in women’s 3-meter synchronized diving. Hu Jia and Xu Hao won the men’s 10-meter platform synchronized medal.

  Meanwhile, the badminton team overcame the tough host to won the of the women’s team event 3-1.

  Weightlifter Tang Gonghong became the sixth lifter to break or tie a world mark in seven women’s events, and two men’s records have fallen.

  Tang won in the women’s over-75-kilogram weightlifting division, and lifted 167.5 kilograms in the clean and jerk, breaking the old mark of 165 set by China’s Ding Meiyuan at the 2000 Olympics.

  Young athlete Sun Yingjie won the women’s 10,000 meters and compatriot Shen Shengfei edged India’s Soma Biswas 5,911 to 5,899 in the heptathlon.

  Zhong Ling, Zhu Minhong, Sun Dan and Zhang Shuo won the rhythmic gymnastics team competition.

  In the men’s 25 meter standard pistol, Chinese trio Liu Guohui, Liu Yadong and Jin Yongde scored 1,724 points in the team’s event to grab the gold.

  The Chinese team of In table tennis, women’s pair Zhang Yining and Li Nan led 3-1 in games but lost the final to South Korea’s Lee Eun-sil and Seok Eun-mi.

  Japan beat China 1-0 to make it to the men’s soccer semifinals, and Iran beat Kuwait 1-0 to advance.
