American Idioms with Chuck

  (Continued)

  3. “Work out” has several different meanings. One refers to “exercise.” When you exercise in order to improve your health or appearance, you “work out.” Conversational examples: Melody “works out” in the gym for two hours every night. Matt’s a fat slob. He needs to start “working out” again.

4.“Chicken out (of)” [informal] When you do not do something because you are afraid, you “chicken out” or “chicken out” of it. Conversational examples: I was going to ask Wanda to go to the dance with me, but I “chickened out.” Peter’s mad at himself because he “chickened out” of asking his boss for a raise yesterday. Now, don’t you “chicken out” of learning English. I am here to help you.
