CHRISTIE’S Hong Kong will present an extraordinary array
of Chinese works of art at its autumn sales Oct. 28 at the JW
Marriott.
The collection includes a magnificent imperial famille
rose “prunus” dish and a unique section devoted entirely to
Buddhist treasures from the court of Emperor Qianlong
(1736-1795).
The imperial famille rose dish, which can be dated to the
Yongzheng reign (1723-1735), is one of the very best quality
porcelain pieces made exclusively for Emperor Yongzheng. It’s
believed to be the only one of its kind to appear at auction.
Thinly potted, the dish is delicately enamelled in a
palette highly praised by the Chinese known as falangcai.
The painting style has been executed by an expert hand
indicating the work of resident imperial ateliers working in
the imperial workshops of the Forbidden City.
With the exception of the base, the surfaces of the dish
have been employed as a three-dimensional canvass, depicting a
well-balanced composition of continuous flowering prunus and
bamboo branches embracing the interior and exterior of the
dish.
The interior is inscribed with a couplet written in
xingshu or running script which poetically summarizes the
scene.
The dish encompasses the Chinese aesthetics of poetry,
painting and calligraphy, known as the “Three Perfections,”
and traditionally regarded as the highest accomplishments in
Chinese fine arts.
The estimated price for the dish is around HK$20 million.
Other highlights of the sale include a seven-sided
famille rose jardiniere from the Yongzheng reign, a
lotus-flower-shaped cloisonnébox and cover bearing a
Ming-dynasty Jingtai mark of the period (1450-1456), and a
large selection of jade carvings.
