City gets tough on pollution
SHENZHEN has stepped up the fight to contain industrial
pollution, vowing to get tougher with the city’s polluting
factories. Polluting factories which fail to meet pollutant
discharge standards will be shut down or moved out of the city
by the end of June next year, the Daily Sunshine reported
yesterday, quoting a top environmental official. Shenzhen was
chosen as a pilot city in March to regulate the sources of
pollutant emissions. Sources of industrial pollution in
Shenzhen are scattered in many regions, making it harder for
the city to reach the environmental standards set by the
State, the official said. However, officials said they would
not be deterred from doing their job. A special taskforce has
been set up to urge key polluting enterprises to meet the
standards by the appointed time, officials said. The first
batch of key polluting sources which have been asked to meet
pollutant discharge standards includes 88 enterprises. From
this week, an inspection of polluting enterprises will be
launched. A file of these firms will be set up. <2001>
