VONGFENG, a strong tropical cyclone, is causing
widespread rain in coastal areas of South China’s Hainan and
Guangdong provinces, according to the Central Meteorological
Station.Originating in the South China Sea Saturday, Vongfeng
was expected to strike coastal areas from Wanning in Hainan
Province to Taishan in Guangdong Province late yesterday or
today.But the storm would only bring rain to Shenzhen, the
city’s flood prevention office told Shenzhen Daily yesterday,
saying it expected no serious impact on the city.The eye of
the cyclone was about 170 kilometers to the southeast of
Wanning at 5 a.m. yesterday, with gale force winds reaching
force 6 to 8 on the Beaufort scale, the weather station
said.The South China Sea, the Beibu Gulf and coastal areas of
Guangdong and Hainan provinces were hit by gale force winds
reaching force 6 to 8 throughout yesterday.Most parts of
Hainan, the eastern parts of Guangdong and the Guangxi Zhuang
Autonomous Region have been experiencing heavy
