Stranded tourists rescued
TEN people stranded on an uninhabited island were rescued
after calling Southern Metropolitan News, a Guangzhou-based
newspaper. All workers, the travelers arrived at Nanpeng Island
Saturday and planned to leave the next day. But the arrival of
typhoon Vongfeng left them stranded. The trapped travelers
made a mobile phone call to a newspaper reporter. The
Yangjiang-based border inspection authorities were alerted and
boats were sent out several times only to be turned back by
the heavy seas. The bad weather forced authorities to abandon
rescue attempts until Tuesday when two boats were sent to
rescue the tourists on the island 38 kilometers away. The ten
people had exhausted food supplies and existed on a diet of
crabs which caused bouts of diarrhoea.(John Woo)
