Caretaker charged withUK schoolgirls’
murder
A SCHOOL caretaker was charged Tuesday with the murder of
two 10-year-old girls whose disappearance from an English
village has dominated the news for two weeks and shocked much
of the country. Police said they had charged Ian Huntley, 28,
with the murder of Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells. Hours
later they charged his girlfriend, Maxine Carr, with
attempting to obstruct justice.Detective Chief Inspector Andy
Hebb of the Cambridgeshire Police said Huntley had undergone a
series of medical examinations since his arrest and that he
had been transferred to a secure unit under mental health laws
on recommendation of a psychiatrist. At Rampton high-security
psychiatric hospital in Nottinghamshire, in central England,
director Dr. Mike Harris said a 28-year-old patient had been
admitted for assessment because of concerns about his fitness
to be questioned by police.Carr, 25, was a teaching assistant
at the girls’ school in Soham, in eastern England. She was
arrested Saturday at the same time as Huntley on suspicion of
murder. Huntley and Carr had appeared prominently on
television after the children’s Aug. 4 disappearance. Huntley
told reporters he had seen them that afternoon, and Carr spoke
about her fondness for the girls and displayed a hand-drawn
card she said one of them had given her. The children’s bodies
were found Sunday near Lakenheath air base, 11 km from Soham,
but post mortem examinations failed to reveal the cause of
death. (SD-Agencies)
