GUANGZHOU Children’s Welfare Center, or the orphanage, yesterday received 10,000 yuan, donated by Chen Rui, a 100-year-old woman who died in June.

　Chen started working as a pediatric nurse in the 1930s. She tended sick children year on year and remained single her whole life.

　Eight years ago, Chen gave 20,000 yuan to the hospital’s pediatrics department as a foundation to reward nurses for high performance.

　She also donated her apartment to the department. The apartment is leased for cash that is used in caring for children.

　Chen lived a simple life. The money and property she donated were her life savings. (Wu Yan)
