ALTHOUGH the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games are
still six years away, the city’s security departments have
already started detailing security plans.
Yesterday’s China Daily quoted sources with the Beijing
Bureau of Public Security saying the bureau had invited 22
experts from disaster relief, meteorology, electricity,
construction and other industries closely related to public
security, to be members of a special expert pool.
These experts will make suggestions and help evaluate
security measures at every stage leading to the Games, the
newspaper said.
The bureau will also build a large-scale security
inspection network supervising stadiums and places visitors
are likely to congregate, according to police sources.
Special anti-terrorist police troops are scheduled to be
organized in the next few years. They will be the backbone of
security forces and the first unit of its kind in China.
Special helicopter landing pads near the main Olympic
stadium to the north of the city are also under
consideration.
The bureau said that about 100,000 security force members
would be needed, including 40,000 policemen, 27,500 armed
police, 10,000 social security officers and 5,000
volunteers.
Beijing will let tenders for an Olympic venue security
system contract next month.(SD-Xinhua)
