POPULAR Chinese actress Xu Fan recently volunteered to become the country’s first celebrity spokesperson for taxation promotion, when she was invited by the Beijing Taxation Bureau to promote tax know-how among citizens. An official with the bureau said they hoped people would take an interest in what Xu has to say and will learn more about taxation.It is said that Xu volunteered for the position as spokesperson and will not receive any payment. Her act has gained full support from the Beijing People’s Arts Theater where she works.China is in the midst of cracking down on taxes, especially among the rich. There have been several arrests of late. Liu Xiaoqing, a famous actress, was arrested on charge of large-scale tax evasion. The Beijing Taxation Bureau confiscated some 1.96 million yuan (US$236,000) of her company’s assets on May 9, Xinhua said. Liu has appeared in many classics such as Hibiscus Town, Little Flowers, Cixi’s Eunuch, Li Lianying and Ruling From Behind the Screen.
