ALESSANDRO DEL PIERO scored twice in Juventus’ 3-0 win
against Atalanta Sunday, kick-starting the Turin club’s
campaign to defend the Italian Serie A title it wrapped up on
the final day of last season.
Meanwhile, last season’s sensation Chievo edged 2000
champion Lazio 3-2 and Udinese tied Parma 1-1.
In the two evening matches, Roberto Baggio began his 21st
season as a professional in Brescia’s 2-1 loss to Piacenza and
Perugia defeated newly-promoted Reggina 2-0 as the Italian
league completed its first weekend of play after a two-week
delay.
In Turin, Salvatore Fresi scored the third in the 90th
minute on a long shot that went just inside the post.
With French striker David Trezeguet sidelined by a knee
injury, Del Piero was joined by newly-signed forward Marco Di
Vaio on the Turin club’s front line.
In Rome, Chievo beat Lazio on midfielder Ivano Della
Morte’s angled shot in the 71st minute at Stadio Olimpico.
German striker Oliver Bierhoff, the former AC Milan star
signed from France’s Monaco, and defender Lorenzo D’Anna also
scored for Chievo.
Diego Simeone and Bernardo Corradi scored for Lazio,
playing its first match since transferring its two biggest
stars — former captain Alessandro Nesta (to Milan) and
Argentine striker Hernan Crespo (to Inter Milan) — two weeks
ago, had gone ahead only five minutes into the game.
In Brescia, while the 35-year-old Baggio showed he could
still direct his team’s offense with his usual poise, it was
Piacenza’s 35-year-old Dario Hubner scorer that won the match.
Brescia midfielder Jonathan Bachini had given his club
the lead in the 68th minute, and Piacenza’s 19-year-old
Colombian forward Johnnier Montano had evened the match in the
72nd.
In Perugia, Reggina made its return to Serie A after one
season in Serie B, and the only southern squad in the league
produced several valiant scoring attempts, including a header
off the cross bar by Alessandro Pierini in the 25th minute.
Reggina’s new Japanese striker Shunzuke Nakamura also
pressured Perugia’s goal to no avail and the Umbrian squad
prevailed 2-0 on scores by Fabrizio Miccoli and Giovanni
Tedesco.
