An English teacher’s reward

Silvia Liu

FOR Jin Nanxiang, an English teacher at Huafu Middle School, her students’ achievements in English studies are her biggest reward.

But two of her students Ma Chen and Zhou Xin recently gave her a most pleasant surprise.

In the city’s Compere Contest in English in July, Ma won first prize and Zhou third, defeating more than 30 participants from other middle schools throughout Shenzhen. The Huafu Middle School team also gained the highest score, displaying the English teaching achievements at the school.

The contest was conducted by Shenzhen Library to find a host and hostess for the Second Shenzhen Library Cup English Play Contest in November.

Most of the students were above junior three grade while Ma Chen, the youngest, had just finished her junior two studies. Besides boldness and liveliness in acting, judges from educational circles in Shenzhen were impressed by the participants’ skills in mastering a second language.

A British judge heaped high praise on Ma Chen’s performance saying the girl, with a perfectly beautiful accent, was the just one they were looking for.

Ma Chen and Zhou Xin have been veteran hosts. To prepare for the contest, Jin spent a fortnight planning the school team’s performance as every detail of lines and gestures would be taken into account by the judges.

When students were in junior one, Jin would conduct her English lessons entirely in English, using gestures to enhance the students’ understanding.

Using this method, the students learned in an all-English language environment. Students were asked to keep English diaries, which she found to be an all-round effective way of improving English. Jin’s success in English teaching owes a lot to support from the school.

School Principal Li Xiaowan required everyone, including teachers of other subjects as well as herself, to speak English during the English Festival.
