SOME 90 workers in a Japanese-owned factory in Zhuhai
were taken to hospital in the early hours of Tuesday with
poisoning from an unknown source.
Earlier the previous night, about 70 workers in a close
environment of a workshop claimed they felt dizzy and sick.
The factory first asked the workers to have a rest, but the
rest of workers felt bad by 3 a.m. Tuesday.
The factory management took the affected workers to the
emergency room of Zhuhai People’s Hospital and shut the
workshop.
It resumed production in 1:30 p.m. Tuesday after
authorities completed an inspection of the workshop. Some 20
workers who went back to work soon after felt dizzy and
breathless and were also sent to hospital.
The workshop has again been closed while an investigation
is conducted by factory management together with health and
safety authorities. A Ms. He of the factory’s general
manager’s office said it was purely an accident and the
factory was making all-out efforts to help the victims.
The head of Zhuhai’s Public Health Bureau said the
investigation was still under way and no conclusion has been
reached yet.
Sources said some of the 70 affected workers had gone
back to the factory after being discharged from hospital while
others with more serious symptoms were still in hospital.
