to an all-time high 8th, ahead of such powerhouses as England
and Italy.
There was no change at the top, with Brazil still leading
the pack ahead of a strong group of European nations that
includes France, Spain and Germany.
September’s rankings saw more significant gains within
the Top 20, notably the Czech Republic, up 4 to 17, and
Paraguay, up 3 to 16.

up 13) and Switzerland (54, up 11).

how to spend the profits.
Chess match postponed
WAYLAND, Massachusetts: The US$1 million match between
former world chess champion Garry Kasparov and the
Israeli-programmed world computer champion Deep Junior has
been postponed until Dec. 1, because “there was not enough
time to give such a prestigious event the required
presentation,’’ according to Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, president of
the World Chess Federation, or FIDE.
The six-game match had been scheduled to be held from
Oct. 1-13 in Jerusalem.
